Thomas Alvarez passed away on his 88th birthday, Thursday, May 20, 2021. Thomas, born in Santa Fe, spent most of his life in the city he loved. He served in the United States Marine Corps and was very quick to correct anyone who used the term ex-marine with "once a Marine always a Marine" we are former Marines. He was a member of many civic and community organizations and gave much of his time to supporting and actively coaching youth. While serving in the Marine Corps he developed a passion for boxing and became part of the boxing team and for many years later worked with youth boxing teams. He was committed to helping at risk youth. He had a great love of art and enjoyed spending time in art galleries and museums. He was a supporter of the Road Runner Food Bank. He retired after 30 years of service from the US Postal Service.
Thomas was preceded in death by his mother, Anita; brothers, Gene and Tony; and stepdaughter, Lorene Sponsel. He is survived by his beloved wife, Eileen Sena Alvarez; daughters, Catherine Alvarez, Dianna Alvarez (Mark), Adrienne Rivera (Ron); sons, David Alvarez (Karen) and Richard Alvarez (Brenda); and the mother of his children, Rose A. Montoya; Eileen's children, Lenore Sena, Maria Gokey (James), and Cipriano Sena; grandchildren, Suezett Gilbert (Justin) Stefani Fishbeck, (Murray), Veronica Winters (Matt), Eugenia McFarley, Anita Alvarez, Thomas Alvarez, and Paul Alvarez (Estelle); great-grandchildren, Lydia and Jude Winters, Mera Fishbeck, Conner, Tanner and Harper Gilbert; Eileen's grandchildren who he loved dearly, Courtney Sponsel (Chevy), Lauren Ploch (Hunter), Ryan Gokey (Caitlin) Maddyn Bennett; and a very special great-niece, Olivia Villarreal. His smile and laughter will always be with us.
