Teresa Ann (Teague) Bernabe

December 22, 1955 — January 6, 2021

Teresa Ann “Chezá” Bernabe passed peacefully from this earth into the loving arms of Our Father on January 6, 2021, following her battle with cancer. Chezá entered the world as the firstborn daughter of Denzell and Elizabeth Teague on December 22nd, 1955 in Silver City, NM. She often spoke fondly of her Mayan adventures with her sister Nina, growing up in Guatemala as missionary preacher’s kids. Her time in Central America inspired her love of travel and launched her love of languages, beginning with Spanish, French, and Italian and eventually including any tongue she encountered. Chezá attended Lee College and Texas Tech, among others, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish. She loved teaching. Chezá taught Spanish at Hope Christian High School and served as a Language Assessment Specialist for the Albuquerque Public Schools.

On September 20,1980, Chezá married the love of her life, Benjamin Bernabe of Gallup, NM. Ben and Chezá were blessed with 40 years of marital love and built a life together full of friends and family. All four of her children grew up on the soccer field, and even though her animated cow bell performances on the sideline embarrassed them in their teen years, they all admit, if she missed a game, it was a notable absence.

Always the life of the party, Chezá will be remembered for her kindness and sparkling personality. She had a unique ability to make every individual feel special. She loved cooking, and often whipped up special meals to celebrate holidays from around the globe for her loved ones.

Chezá is survived by her father, Dr. Denzell Teague and his wife Mona (referred to lovingly by Chezá as her ‘bonus mom’); her husband Benjamin Bernabe; daughter Chandra Witkowski (Matt); and sons Aaron Bernabe, Father Christopher Bernabe and Matthew Bernabe; her sister Nina Biava (Dominic); Sister-in-law Louise Watkins (Jim), and Brother-in-law Michael Bernabe (Deena), grandchildren Ryker and Brinley Witkowski, Frankfurter Bernabe (grandpup); Aunts Betty Stevens (Dub), Nina Tramel, Uncle James Brit Henry; 9 nieces and 1 nephew and many others held close to her heart.

Chezá was predeceased by her mother, Elizabeth Teague, mother and father-in-law Elsie and Louis Bernabe, who doubtlessly will welcome her into heaven.

My Red, White, and Blue Child bride. You disliked it so much when I called you my “Red Head” – for “my hair was red not my head.” But your fiery, long red hair, your milky white skin and your deep piercing-blue eyes made you stand out in any crowd; everyone knew when you walked into a room.

My Love, you are Braver than you ever believed – after all you did take a chance on me; Stronger than you seemed – everybody sees your strength; Smarter than you thought – and I’ve hung around some very smart people; Loved more then you could ever know! And you know I’ve Loved you from the start!

If I could have given you one thing and only one thing else in this life, I would have given you the ability to see yourself through my eyes! Only then would you have realized how special to me you are! And also your worth in the eyes of your children and grandchildren – it is the same.

You never knew how good it felt – how good it is – to marry someone above my life’s station, in all the ways that matter. You had Faith in God and you had faith also in me, which renewed my Faith, and You made me a better man, a Faith-Full man. Such are just a few of the many gifts you have given me.

At our wedding, in my vows to you, I said, “We are embarking hand in hand, together we stand, on the threshold of a dream.” You helped me turn dream into a reality. LOVE YA – Te amo
