Roy Frank Tachias

January 25, 1932 — February 4, 2021

On February 4, 2021, Sergeant First Class Roy F. Tachias, United States Army Retired, went home to be with the Lord.  Roy is preceded in death by his parents, Maxemiliano and Erlinda Tachias, his brothers Max, Rudy, and Charlie Tachias, and his sisters Lydia Tachias and Elsie Lopez. He is survived by his wife, Ramoncita, his brother Arnold Tachias, and sisters Orpha Lopez, Nora Anaya, and Patsy Zunita. Roy’s children are daughter Kathleen Morris (Alfred), son Lieutenant Colonel Michael Tachias, US Army Retired (Rowena), daughter Jeanette Gilmore (Jeffrey), and son Colonel Brian Tachias Sr., US Army Retired (Judy).  Roy had 9 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren who loved him dearly.

Roy recently celebrated his eighty-ninth year of life with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren surrounding him.  He was born in 1932 in the village of Cabezon, NM and later received his First Holy Communion in the town of Peña Blanca.  As a young seventeen-year old, Roy proudly joined the United States Army with the consent of his parents. He became a highly decorated Korean War Veteran having been awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with Valor, and the Purple Heart.  During that time, the Stars & Stripes newspaper referred to SFC Tachias as “The One-Man Army” for his courageous acts of heroism.  After he completed his military obligation, Roy returned home and married the former Ramoncita Gonzales of Albuquerque.  He spent the next eight years working for Lockheed Martin in California and eventually returned to work in New Mexico.  He re-enlisted into the Army in 1959 and made a career of it.  He served two tours in Vietnam, and was stationed in multiple Army posts around the country as well as in France.  He retired from the US Army in 1976 and moved his family to a ranch in Torrance County.  Roy attended college after his military retirement and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration from National College.  He went on to work as a counselor with the New Mexico State Mental Health Program in Estancia, New Mexico.

Roy loved sharing his family history through stories about his early life in Cabezon, NM and sharing his experiences about the Korean War and the Army.  Roy loved ranching and taking care of his horses and dogs.  He leaves behind a legacy of devotion and patriotism for this nation that was passed down to his sons who served in the Army and his grandsons who are currently serving.  Roy was a humble cowboy and soldier who was a steadfast example of a man who walked in faith and was protected by the Lord all the days of his life.  His family will miss him dearly.  Though their hearts are filled with sorrow, the family rejoices knowing that he is with the Lord.

A Memorial Service for friends and family will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2021 at Calvary Chapel of Albuquerque,  4001 Osuna Rd NE,87109 .  If you are unable to join us in person, the service will be recorded and posted on Facebook, at the following link: https://www.facebook.com/judy.tachias/ SFC Roy Tachias will be laid to rest at the Santa Fe National Cemetery in a private burial service.  Future plans are being made to transfer his remains to Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.  In addition, a Celebration of Life event in Roy’s honor is scheduled to take place this coming summer at the Cabezon Wounded Warrior Haven in Cabezon, New Mexico.  Flowers may be delivered to Calvary Chapel,  4001 Osuna Rd NE, 87109 in his honor.
