Robert J. Schumann

Robert “Shorty” Schumann passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2020 in Albuquerque, NM after a brief illness. He was born on May 26, 1941 in Ganado, AZ to Herman and Rebecca Schumann. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Monica (Nicky) Schumann and brother, Herbert Schumann.

He is mourned by his children, Pat (Stewart Smith), Chuck (Pat), Mary Karen, Amy Ruskin (Seth) and Michael Schumann. Also surviving him are his grandsons, Khristian, Aerin, and Andrew Schumann; granddaughters, Sydney and Abigail Ruskin; step-grandchildren EJ and Josh Lucero; great-granddaughters, Maya and Jade Lucero; sister-in-law, Angela Schumann; nieces Katherine and Karla; nephew, Ben, and his faithful dog Toro.

Shorty, as he was affectionately called, was grew up in Ft. Defiance, AZ and graduated from Window Rock High School where he excelled as an athlete in many sports and was popular. He attended the University of Arizona and Western New Mexico University where he continued his athletic pursuits. He returned to Window Rock, AZ where he and Nicky raised their family.

He had a long and varied work history in the trades and was a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Local 627. He worked in many power plants, copper smelters, and mines in the Western US. He retired in 1981 after an injury while working at the Palo Verde Nuclear Power Station. He also was an entrepreneur operating a full-service gas station and automotive repair shop in Ft. Defiance.

He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed, shooting, fishing and hunting. Photography was a passion and lifelong hobby. His greatest joy was his family and the time spent with them. He was a good neighbor and was always ready to lend a hand or meal to those in need. He loved a good conversation and the telling of a tall tale. He had many great and wonderful stories that he shared freely with anyone who would listen and could make one up just for you.

Burial will be private due to the extenuating circumstances and a Mass and Celebration of Life will be held at a future date.
