Richard Lynn Mitchell

March 18, 1933 — July 29, 2022

Richard (Dick) L. Mitchell passed away peacefully in his sleep Friday morning, July 29, 2022. Richard the son of CJ Mitchell Sr. and Annie Lee Daniels Mitchell was born on Saturday, March 18, 1933, in the farming community of Kildare in northeast Texas.

After retiring, following twenty years and six months of service in the U.S. Air Force, Richard made his home in Albuquerque. He became a decades long revered official of high school, and college softball, baseball, and basketball. He was inducted into the Albuquerque Softball, Baseball Hall of Fame on Wednesday, September 26, 1990, for his "...outstanding contributions to baseball". In 2008 Richard was inducted into the New Mexico Officials Association Hall of Fame by the New Mexico Activities Association.

Richard had a great affinity for children and youth. Following his retirement from the Air Traffic Control Center, he worked as a substitute teacher for eight years, and spent many years teaching Sunday School.

Richard is survived by his three children; a stepdaughter, and her two sons, and grandchildren, a granddaughter, and a great-granddaughter; his loving wife, Ruth; sister, Emma Peoples; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins who are residents of the state of Washington.

A Celebration of Richard's life will be held Saturday, August 13, 2022, 10:00 a.m, at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 2801 Lomas Blvd NE.
