Miriam Rachel Simmons

June 22, 1951 — January 23, 2020

Miriam Rachel Simmons, age 68, passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2020 from Acute Leukemia. She was born on June 22, 1951 in Caracas, Venezuela. Miriam is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Vicente and Dawn Quezada; and her grandchildren, Taylor N. Quezada, Savannah R. Quezada and Vicente M. Quezada Jr., all of Albuquerque. She is also survived by her sister, Sharon Beckley of Colorado Springs CO; nieces, Penny Parang of Austin, TX and Patricia Bochniarz of Denver, CO; and Penny’s two sons, Tyler Parang and Jacob Parang.

She was a hard-working woman and not afraid of a good challenge. She lived an exciting life traveling with her grandmother in various countries, along with the many road trips she took with her daughter while she was growing up. She hiked the Grand Canyon four times, three with her daughter, along with many other adventures with jobs that took her to little towns during many summers. She enjoyed playing guitar, drawing and calligraphy. She even submitted a tape to a record studio back in 1972 of her song writing and singing skills. She was also talented in carpentry and in 1976 she converted her VW van into a mini RV. She and Bambi had many traveling trips. She had a true adventurous spirit.

Miriam received her master’s degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from Texas Women’s University in 1992. She went on to work for the VA in Albuquerque as a Registered Dietitian, a profession she was very passionate about, and became a Certified Diabetes Educator. She loved her patients! After leaving the VA, she started her own business, Gabriel’s Landing, in which she created Yoga mat bags, check book covers, book marks with her calligraphy skills and many more items which she sold at local craft shows, she loved the time and meeting new people.

She was diagnosed with stage 3 Breast Cancer in 2009. She fought and won, clear of cancer until September of 2016 when cancer in the chest wall was found. She underwent multiple surgeries along with chemotherapy and radiation. She did this all with a smile and positive attitude believing she would win the battle! Until the last days before being admitted to hospital for her final months, she was working in her back-yard planning for new projects as soon as the weather changed. She was very loved by many people. Her smile was infectious, and you couldn’t help but want to know more about her and what made her that way.

Her Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, February 22, 2020, 11:00 a.m., at FRENCH – Wyoming with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any Leukemia or Breast Cancer funds.
