Josephine (Bencomo) Bencomo

March 21, 1947 — March 30, 2021

Josephine "Josie" Bencomo, 74. Our beloved Mother and Nana passed away on Tuesday, March 30, 2021, with her family by her side.

Born Friday, March 21,1947 in Silver City, NM, to Augustine "Ben" and Carmen Bencomo. She is survived by her daughter, Aileen Gottlieb; son-in-law, David Gottlieb; granddaughters, Alex Gottlieb and Taylor Gottlieb; boyfriend, Roy Boggus; brothers, Bobby Bencomo and Matias Bencomo; sisters, Gloria Whidby and Tina Bencomo; sister-in-law, Joan Bencomo; and brothers-in-law, Don Whidby and Bob Grandin. Josie is preceded in death by her parents; her youngest sibling, Alice Bencomo; and her niece, Andrea Bencomo Wood.

Josie retired from the City of Albuquerque where she was a librarian and supervisor. Josie loved reading. She was always surrounded by books, and she would read multiple books simultaneously. Josie liked to travel. She enjoyed several trips with her sisters and traveled to China. Josie loved her pets, Leo, Rudy, and Samantha.

Josie loved her family. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. Josie was a second mother to her granddaughters, Alex and Taylor. Every weekend was spent with Nana. According to Alex and Taylor: scrambled eggs, toast, and hot chocolate for breakfast and grilled cheese and chips for lunch. Candy, ice cream, and unconditional love were served all day long at Nana's house. Josie was incredibly patient, attentive, forgiving, loving, and kind. In addition, she was independent, self sufficient, and resilient. Josie instilled a love of reading, learning, and adventure in her daughter and granddaughters. Son-in-law, David says "she treated me like her own son." Aileen, David, Alex, and Taylor feel unbelievably humbled and fortunate to have had her in their lives and want to live by her example.

Josie loved her siblings. They shared a strong bond. Josie enjoyed texts from her siblings and seeing photos and videos of her siblings and their children. From her sister Gloria: My sister, Jo was a wonderful older sister. She was always a loving compassionate caregiver, the oldest of six children. When our mother went to work she put Josie in charge of us younger rowdy kids! God bless her! She actually liked cooking and cleaning up at home and delegating chores. She had her hands full with me! I fondly remember one day I was being especially naughty and wouldn't do what I was supposed to do. She took the kitchen broom to me and I remember laughing inside and thinking "does she really think she's hurting me?" Of course, she didn't hurt any of us! We grew up admiring and loving her immensely. She loved everyone unconditionally and will be greatly missed.

Josie was caregiver and nurturer to many. She was caregiver to her sister, Alice in the years before she passed. Josie was cared for by her boyfriend, Roy in her final years, and we are thankful.

Josie considered herself a spiritual person. Her faith in God was very strong and of comfort to her in her final days. Josie will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Josie was petite in stature and few on words, but her presence was immense. Josie was, and will always be, our center. We have a hole in our hearts.
