Joaquin "Jake" Antonio De Vargas

Joaquin (Jake) De Vargas, age 86, passed peacefully in his home on Sunday, December 30, 2018.

Joaquin was born in Tierra Amarilla, NM and graduated from Santa Fe High School where he was voted class president during his junior and senior years.  He graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1955.  On January 14, 1956, he married the love of his life, Cipriana (Cipy).  Joaquin served in the U.S. Air Force for three years where he flew as a navigator on the B-36 “Peacemaker.”  He then began his career at Sandia National Laboratories where he retired after 33 years of service.

He was active in the community and served on several committees and boards, was an active parent at his children's schools, an Indian Guide Leader for several years, and coached Little League baseball from 1960 to 1976. Jake and Cipy were devoted Lobo fans and followed the Lobo teams in all their games.  They both enjoyed league bowling and played Bridge for many years.  Upon his retirement, he became an avid golfer and scored a hole-in-one at Isleta Golf Course in May 2000.  Joaquin was skilled in woodworking and enjoyed making things to enhance the appearance of their home.  He loved camping and fly fishing and enjoyed taking his family on vacations giving his children appreciation for the national parks in the USA.

Joaquin is preceded in death by his loving wife, Cipriana. He is survived by his daughters Theresa De Vargas, Angela McDonald (Robert), and Gloria Garringer all of Albuquerque, NM, sons Michael De Vargas of Albuquerque, NM and David De Vargas (Steve Champion) of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; eight grandchildren Eric Lahr (Lisa) of Amarillo, TX, Sarah Riley (Tim) of Springfield, OH, Chris Edwards (Julie) of Bradenton, FL, Jacob Krahn-Cordova (Kd) and Justin Cordova of Portland, OR, and Brittani, Ashli, and Michael De Vargas all of Albuquerque, NM; ten great-grandchildren Haylee, Jocelyn (deceased), Levi and Marley Lahr, Jackson, Isabel and Silas Riley, Ava Edwards, Joaquin Krahn-Cordova, and Jaiden De Vargas; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his faithful canine companion, Diego, who brought him much joy and happiness during the late years of his life.

A Rosary will be recited on Monday, January 14, 2019, 8:30 a.m. at The Shrine of St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 11401 Indian School Road NE.  Friends may visit beginning at 8:00 a.m.   Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Interment is to follow at Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery.
