Jacqueline Morris (Jackie) Shaffer

February 1, 1925 — July 27, 2020

Jacqueline Morris “Jackie” Shaffer died peacefully on Monday, July 27, 2020, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was 95.

Born in Pueblo, she grew up in Denver, attending North High School and Denver University, where she majored in music. At DU she met and married World War II pilot and art student Harrison L. Shaffer Jr. in 1946, and following college and the births of their two sons, Harrison III and Paul, the couple worked as teachers, including four years in the then-Belgian Congo operating a teacher-training school for the Methodist Board of Missions. Their third child, Martha, was born in the Congo.

In 1960, when Harrison took a job with the Foreign Service, the Shaffers embarked on a twenty-one-year odyssey that would take them to Viet Nam, Nigeria, and the Philippines. In addition to their official duties representing the United States abroad, Jackie and Harrison kept active in their chosen fields of music and art, interests that would follow them into their retirement years in Colorado. Among her many musical pursuits, Jackie played in the Jefferson Symphony and the Evergreen Chamber Orchestra.

She is survived by her sons, Harrison III of Tucson, and Paul (Susan) of Albuquerque, and two granddaughters, Amanda of Albuquerque and Evan of San Francisco, and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial for Jackie will be held at a later date.
