Gwendolyn Cameron

April 24, 1942 — November 25, 2014

Age 72, a resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico since 1984, died Tuesday, November 25, 2014. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Hanson and husband Keith of Boulder, CO; grandchildren Anna Hanson of Chicago, IL and John Hanson of Boulder, CO; a brother Leonard Sukman and wife Hilda of Savannah, GA; nieces Abby Sukman and her husband Bob Kamertz of Burtonsville, MD and Julie Sukman of Savannah, GA; and stepchildren Florence Cameron and Robert W. Cameron. She is also survived by many loving friends including Roger Burns, Geraldo Arellano and Gary and Glenda Rogers, all of Albuquerque, NM. Ms. Cameron was preceded in death by her father Sol Sukman, mother Nettie Dechowitz, her husband of her first marriage John Hackett and her husband of her second marriage Robert G. Cameron and his mother, Frieda Cameron. Ms. Cameron was born in Brooklyn, NY and graduated from Erasmus Hall High School and Brooklyn College, and then lived in New York and New Jersey. In her career at New York Telephone and AT&T, Ms. Cameron broke new ground by holding positions of increasing responsibility in those organizations that women had never held before. In retirement, she pursued (and often self-taught) poetry, watercolor painting, music, and Latin dancing. These artistic pursuits resulted in her involvement in writing and producing four commercial CDs (including her own album in 2013), and helping to produce a ballroom dance album designed for dance instruction. Ms. Cameron also donated some of her paintings to the Albuquerque Museum. She supported many local charities and was a lifelong faithful New York Giants fan. A graveside service and internment will take place at Sandia Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to From The Heart Foundation, 300 San Mateo Boulevard NE, Albuquerque, NM 87108 (fromtheheartfd.org). Ms. Cameron was passionate about feeding the hungry.
