Glen Rayford Farmer

February 26, 1940 — May 17, 2020

Glen Rayford Farmer, age 80, a long-time resident of Albuquerque, NM, died quietly on Sunday, May 17, 2020. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Terry P. Farmer; his parents, William Farmer and Lona Ricketts; his sister, Joyce Reaves; and two of his three brothers, Donald and Jimmy Farmer. He is survived by his oldest brother, William Farmer; son, Robert Farmer and wife, Michelle; son, Stephen Farmer and his wife, Heidi; daughter, Lisa Farmer and her fiancé, Alex; and son, Thomas Farmer. He was “Papa” to his ten grandchildren, Roxanne, Robert Anthony, Raychele, Haley, Ashley, Hanna, Aaron, Royce, Madison, and Pami; and five great-grandchildren.

Glen was born in a farmhouse on a small farm in southern Tennessee. He moved to Detroit, MI during high school years and later joined the U.S. Army after graduating. Upon completion of basic training, he had the choice of going to either Albuquerque, NM or Paris, France. He said that he never heard of Albuquerque, so he decided to go there. After arriving to work at Kirkland, AFB, he met the love of his life, Tessie, later known as Terry, at the NCO Club on a Friday afternoon. Shortly after he left the U.S. Army, he married Terry and worked for the City of Albuquerque for a brief time. He then worked as a contractor at ACF Industries which supported the Atomic Energy Department. In 1963, he started his Federal Service career working for the Albuquerque Area Office of the Indian Health Service, which was part of the Public Health Service in the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. In January 1965, he was offered a position at the Property Management Section in the Alaska Native Health Area Office in Anchorage, AK, and he took it. Glen worked for the U.S. Public Health Service for over 30 years and lived in places like Ft. Defiance and Window Rock, AZ, before finally settling back in Albuquerque.

After retiring from Federal Service, Glen was an avid volunteer at Risen Savior Catholic Church, planting and maintaining beautiful flowers year after year. He loved to travel back to Tennessee often to spend time with his family, fishing and telling stories of his life. When he was home in Albuquerque, he loved to spoil his grandkids, cook for all, and garden for his family. He was able to recite many recipes from memory. His cooking was a way to many people’s hearts.

Glen, Dad, Pops, Papa, Gleno, Uncle Glen was loved by many and provided us many great meals, memories and lessons. We love and miss you greatly.
