Farrell Baron Brumley

d. May 31, 2019

Farrell Baron Brumley of Albuquerque died Friday, May 31, 2019.  He always went by his middle name of Baron. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mildred Brumley; son, Barney Brumley and wife, Judy; daughter, April Thompson and husband, Sandy;  and daughter, Nannette Harrison; grandchildren, Patrick and Daniel Brumley, Erin Thompson, Bradley Thompson (Sarah), and  Shannon Williams (Jordan). He is also survived by his brother, Gerald Brumley and wife Joyce, and their daughter, Katherine Darlington. There are numerous nieces and nephews.

Baron grew up on a ranch on Summit Ridge near Dolores, Colorado. He loved hunting, fishing, riding his horse,  making model airplanes, and learning how radios work.

Baron graduated from Dolores High School in 1944 when he was 17 and immediately joined the army of World War II.  He saw duty in the Philippines, North Korea, and the South Pacific. In 1946, he was discharged.  Later he joined the New Mexico Air National Guard for several years.

Baron graduated from University of New Mexico with a degree in Physics.  He worked at Sandia Laboratories for 33 years and was involved in the atomic tests in the South Pacific, and in Area 51 in Nevada.

In 1974 Baron met with John Lilly of Los Alamos and Clarence Gailard of Albuquerque. They were interested in enology and viticulture and each had his own small vineyard.  In this meeting the New Mexico Vine and Wine Society was started.  In 1977 Baron designed a winery south of Belen, New Mexico, known as Rio Valley Cellars.  He was the winemaker there for some time.  In the 1970s there were only 4 wineries in New Mexico.  Now there are over 40 in the Land  of Enchantment.

Because of his love for flying, he owned a Cessna 172 with his friend, Pat Patterson.  It was hangared at Mid Valley Airpark in Los Lunas, New Mexico.  They had great fun flying it around New Mexico.

Baron loved working with wood and was a great craftsman.  In 1991 he won first place in the New Mexico State Fair for a balalaika he made out of several types of wood.  He never did find anyone in Albuquerque who knew how to play a balalaika.
