Elizabeth "Betty" Erickson

d. June 29, 2020

Elizabeth “Betty” Erickson, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and longtime resident of Albuquerque passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, June 29, 2020.  Betty had a long life and entered heaven at age 94. She was born in Jacksonville, Illinois and was the daughter of UNM History Professor and author Marion Dargon and Lena Dargon.  She loved to tell the story of the early UNM campus with only a few small buildings.  She relished growing up with her brother Marion Dargon II and Helen Dargon Schmidt- both she missed dearly over the years after their passing.

Betty followed her father to a higher education with an interest in history and earned her degree in nursing from UNM.  She continued her love of learning returning to UNM at age 56, enjoying learning with young people.  She did her nursing training in Trinidad, Colorado.  Over the years, she would often tell of her favorite nursing experience was her time at St. Joseph’s Medical Center as a RN in the NICU area and taking care of babies.

While working in Trinidad as a nurse, she met her husband, Donald Erickson.  They moved to Albuquerque and started their family.  She is survived by son, Russell Erickson and daughter-in-law Jackie Erickson; daughters, Leslie Riggins and Terri Archibeque.  She is also survived by her grandchildren, Bradley Erickson, Chris Archibeque, Bill Ohler, Donald Riggins, Robert Riggins, Elizabeth Riggins, Christopher Riggins, and Kimie Erickson. She loved hearing about the fun activities of her eight great-grandchildren.  Her family has seen loss with the passing of her husband Don over four decades ago; son, Robert Erickson; son-in-law, Jeff Riggins; granddaughters, Ashly Erickson and Donna Archibeque.

Her time in Albuquerque included attending St. Johns Methodist Church, was a homemaker, active member in the church Women’s Auxiliary, a Girl Scout Leader, and baseball team mom.  She very much enjoyed attending Albuquerque Little Theatre and tending to her garden and yard.  She supported many non-profits and great causes such as the American Heart Association, Animal Humane, and the Parkinson’s Association to name a few.

Betty ran into her high school sweetheart Glen Mayer during a reunion and the two widowers became very close.  They enjoyed traveling the world including exploring all 7 continents, going on several cruises, visiting national and theme parks including Disneyland and Dolly World.  She enjoyed her time with Glen and lived several years in the Mount Vernon, Virginia area, enjoying much time with Glen and family.  She used her nursing skills to help Glen during an injury and was saddened upon his departure to heaven.

She will be remembered for her warm heart, desire to help others, and her love of flowers.  She had an uncanny knack of making lists, keeping tabs on things to help communicate information for family, and decorating for holidays.

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal.  Love leaves a memory no one can steal.
