Edward Lamon Lybarger

February 6, 1931 — April 21, 2021

Edward Lybarger, 90, beloved son, brother, husband, dad, grand & great-grandfather, passed away on April 21, 2021, from skin cancer and dementia health issues. An Albuquerque native, Ed was born on February 6, 1931, to Alvin Earl and Rose Edna (Miller) Lybarger. He & three sisters grew up in the Huning Castle and South Valley areas of the city. Ed had a memorable childhood, often telling stories about his adventures hopping trains to “just go,” setting old tires on fire near the volcanoes (causing city residents to worry about possible eruption), skipping class to see “Wings” in the Kimo Theater (but getting caught by teachers and principal instead), and other endless tales. He and life-long friend (85 years!!), George Wright, were also in cahoots when floating homemade rafts down the Rio Grande, shagging planes up & down Wyoming Blvd from the old Sandia Base in the 1940’s, or illegally driving cars together as kids. He met Faye Glassman while out with friends at the old East End Roller Rink; they married in 1947 when he was 16 and she was 15. Their son Sam came along in 1948 and then Roy in 1961. After graduating from ABQ High, Ed served a 5-yr apprenticeship with the Santa Fe RR in the old ABQ rail yard. He served in the Railroad Battalion of the U.S. Army (stationed in ABQ) during the Korean War. He next began a 30-yr career as the plant manager for the ABQ Publishing Co (ABQ Journal). An accomplished machinist and millwright, after retiring the first time, he used his knowledge and experience to work for Ideal Cement (Holnam) in Tijeras Canyon. After 14 yrs he retired the second time in the 90’s so he and Faye could spend time together before her health began to deteriorate. Together they enjoyed boating & camping, having various boats, houseboats, campers, motorhomes, and fifth-wheels throughout their marriage. They belonged to Conchas Lake boat club, and Thunderbird, Excel, & Classic Travel Trailer RV clubs where they met many folks from all over the country, many who would become lifelong friends - too many to mention by name. Ed was a strong example for our family in so very many ways. He was a curious thinker & problem solver, a traveler and learner, a helper to anyone who needed a hand. Ed was also a faithful believer in Jesus Christ. He & Faye together were members of Hoffmantown Church for many years, and he would later become a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church and attend regularly with his family. He was a “Ford guy” to the core (belonged to the NM Classic Trucks club), but loved working on all types of vehicles. Ed LOVED coffee, sweets, and green chile cheeseburgers. He was a kind, gentle, loving man who will be dearly missed – especially his easy smile. A special “thank you” to those who cared for him in his last year at Manzano Del Sol Village. Ed is predeceased by his wife, parents, and all sisters. He is survived by his sons Sam (Judy) and Roy (Angela); grandchildren Leslie (Jared), Russell, Ariel (Nick), Lily, & Nathan; and great-grandchildren Cooper, Kinsley, and Jackson; sister-in-law Sandy Berry & husband Lee; and numerous nephews & nieces (with special “thank you” to his nephew, Kevin Cook & wife Carrie). Due to COVID, a private service will be held for immediate family only. A public celebration is tentatively planned for September. Please contact Roy & Angela at (505) 286-5881 or ral20kings@hotmail.com about celebration details.

A memorial car show to celebrate his life and his enthusiasm for cars will held Saturday, September 4, 2021. Please call Roy & Angela Lybarger at 505-286-5881 to RSVP and get details.  Thank you for honoring his memory.
