Dorothy Abbott

d. May 11, 2019

Dorothy Ross Mackey-Abbott passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at the age of 94.

She was born Saturday, August 16, 1924 to Albert DeWitt Mackey and Dorothy Ross-Mackey in Elkton, Maryland.  She attended school in Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada and the University of Maryland. She joined the US Army in February 1945 and was stationed at various Army bases in Georgia and Tennessee where she trained and worked as a surgical technician. After World War II ended, she was transferred to Panama where she met and married her late husband of 61 years, Allan Abbott in 1950. They were transferred to Sandia Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico and built their home in Tijeras, New Mexico. Dorothy left the Army in 1954 and worked at Sandia Laboratories. She has been a lifelong member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the Mayflower Society. She also was very active and volunteered countless hours to the Women's Army Corps (WAC) and was a member of St. Marks on the Mesa Episcopal Church.  She loved entertaining and socializing, and would greet you with a smile and a gentle touch. Anyone meeting Dorothy would not forget her. She was always upbeat and happy and had the most infectious laugh. If you ever ran out of anything to talk about just ask her “how’s the weather”. She always knew the most current weather conditions no matter what part of the country.  If there was bad weather in your area, she would know about it and call to check on you. She was an avid traveler, reader, enjoyed bowling and knitting and was sure one day she was going to win the Publishers Clearing House.  Later in life Dorothy stopped driving and many close friends, family and neighbors including Jean-Charles Michel, Keiko, Minori, Chrissy, Kim and Diane provided companionship and helped her with daily activities.  During the last year Dorothy lived in a small, personalized senior living home with a few other seniors and had a very active social life. She loved the attention and pampering provided there where they made her feel like a princess.

She is survived by daughter, Carmen Abbott of St Johns, FL; son, Manley Abbott of Livermore, ME; four grandchildren; and many great grandchildren.
