Barbara Anne Abercrombie

On Wednesday, April 1, 2020 Barbara Anne Abercrombie M.D., MBA, died after a three-year struggle with cancer. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Noah Harris, M.D., a retired internist, and a daughter, Adrienne Abercrombie Harris, J.D., MBA. Dr. Abercrombie was born April 5, 1949, the oldest of seven children born to the late Fred and Virginia (Patten) Abercrombie in East Meadow, New York. She was raised in The Bronx, New York, in the Sotomayor Housing Projects (formerly the Bronxdale Houses). After graduating James Monroe High School, she attended Bennington College in Vermont. There she was encouraged to attend medical school by her organic chemistry professor. After graduating college in 1971, she attended the Harvard Medical School where she met her husband. She trained in internal medicine at Montefiore Hospital and the University of Minnesota Hospitals. A fellowship in rheumatology followed at Tufts Medical Center. She and her husband then practiced together in Taunton, Massachusetts from 1979 until 1992, when they relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico. In Albuquerque she held positions at several sites including Lovelace Medical Center and the University of New Mexico. From 2000-2006 Dr. Abercrombie practiced in Texas at the Scott and White Hospital and Texas A&M Medical School. In 2006, she retired from patient care. She was an avid reader and listener of music. In 2018, she embarked on a systematic goal of learning about the First World War. She was intent on physical activity and exercised most days until the onset of her illness and treatment. Her proudest achievements in her mind were her daughter and her long marriage. She is also survived by her six siblings and numerous nieces and nephews. Donations in her name may be made to the scholarship fund at Bennington College, College Drive, Bennington, Vermont.
