Anthony Tyrone Ward

September 29, 1948 — May 29, 2020

Anthony Tyrone Ward, age 71, of Rio Rancho, NM, a beloved partner, father, grandfather, and friend was called home to be with our Lord, on Friday, May 29, 2020. He was born in Chicago, IL on September 29, 1948 to the late Jerlean C. Sumler and Eugene Ward. He is survived by his lifelong partner, Barbara Lucero; his two daughters, Janel Ward and Tyri Quintanilla; his son, Ray White, sons-in-law, Matthew Coleman and Hernan Quintanilla; his cousin, Theophilus (T.C.) Haraway; and three grandchildren, Josiah, Eliana and Sebastian.

Tony was raised on the South Side of Chicago. He started working at the young age of 14, and subsequently built a strong work ethic that he would carry with him throughout his life. Chicago is also the place where his lifelong love of fitness began. He had to pull his first weight set across the city in a wagon in order to get them home. His passion and dedication served him well, as he went on to compete and place in multiple bodybuilding competitions later in life.

On October 1,1965, at the age of 17, he left Chicago to serve his country in the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Marine Corp. Tony served his country proudly and was honorably discharged on May 16, 1969. It was during his time in Vietnam that he met the late Rick Ford, who would later introduce him to Albuquerque, NM in 1979.

It was in Albuquerque that Tony began his professional truck driving career and began to build a family with his partner, Barbara. He worked tirelessly to provide for those he loved, and often went above and beyond to ensure the wellbeing of his family. He had a gentle and loving heart and would be the first to offer assistance to those in need. He was a man of great kindness and great spiritual wealth.

He retired from Yellow Freight in 2005 as a proud Teamster.

All who knew Tony would agree his smile could brighten any room, and his warm disposition was to be admired. He was a simple man with a grateful heart. He never met a stranger and could not leave the house without seeing someone he knew. He welcomed anyone and everyone into his home. His presence could immediately make you feel at ease. He touched so many lives with his love and generosity. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy and memory will live on through us all.

Tony will be laid to rest at Santa Fe National Cemetery where he may be visited at a later date.
