Devoted Husband, Father, Veteran, Musician, and Friend
William "Bill" Lord passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 16, 2025, at the age of 99. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and loyal friend, Bill lived a long and meaningful life rooted in integrity, tradition, and service to others.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Bill moved with his mother to Santa Fe, New Mexico, during his youth. He attended The Abbey in Cañon City, Colorado, before enlisting in the US Navy at age 17. He often told the story of his mom waving goodbye at the train station in Lamy, New Mexico wondering if she would ever see him again. Bill bravely served in the Pacific Theater during World War II, piloting landing craft in all of the major battles, later serving again during the Korean War. He was mute on the subject of his war experience until his later years when he was willing to share some of the harrowing experiences he endured. He continued his military service during his retirement by playing taps for military funerals in Albuquerque and Santa Fe.
After returning home, Bill earned his business degree from the University of New Mexico. A proud UNM alumnus, he remained a lifelong supporter of the university and its athletic programs.
At 25, Bill married the love of his life, Marion Hurley Lord, from Clayton, New Mexico whom he met at a wedding in California. Together they built a beautiful life rooted in faith, family, and service. Married for 55 years, until her passing, they raised three sons - Bill, Roger, and Jim - and created a close-knit family that remained the center of his world.
Known to his grandchildren as "Papa," Bill took pride in their lives and accomplishments: Mark, Tracy, Megan, Brett, Kyle, Taylor, and Madison - and his great-grandchildren: Anabelle, Juliette, Jonah, Elise, Luna, and Damian, finding joy in his growing family.
Bill found peace and happiness in the mountains of Colorado at "The Cabin," where generations have gathered to fish, laugh, and make lifelong memories.
Bill was a dedicated Shriner, serving as Potentate, and a talented trumpet player who shared his music as a member of the Ballut Abyad Shrine Band.
He was a strict but loving father. The days of hunting and fishing were incredible gifts to his three boys. Roger stood up at his 90th birthday celebration and said "my dad never told us he loved us" then after a pause he said "he never needed to, he showed his love every day."
Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marion; his parents, Dr. DeForest and Jeannette Lord; his brothers, James Schultz, Dee Lord; and his grandson, Taylor. He is survived by his sons, Bill Lord (Lynette), Roger Lord (Rebecca), and Jim Lord (Jenny); his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many lifelong friends from every chapter of his life.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date to honor and remember Bill's remarkable journey. If you choose to honor the memory of Bill, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
Bill's life was a testament to devotion, service, and quiet strength - and his spirit lives on in all who were blessed to know him.
