William B. Hughes of Albuquerque passed away in his home on April 18. He is survived by his sons Brian and Kevin Hughes and daughters-in-law Melody Hughes and Maria-Elena Hughes, grandchildren Thomas, Reagan, and Lillian Hughes, all of Albuquerque, brothers David Hughes of Niskayuna, NY, Richard Hughes of Georgetown, TX, sister Elizabeth Hughes Kasparian of Salem, UT, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Sylvia Hughes, and his sisters, Jennifer Hughes and Peggy Hughes Miller.
Bill was born on June 5, 1946, in Syracuse, NY, and as a child lived in Forestport, NY; Anaheim, CA; West Lafayette, IN; Oak Forest, IL; and Albuquerque. He graduated from Highland High School in 1964 and from UNM in 1968. He served as a Navy officer in Hawaii. After being honorably discharged from the military, he returned to Albuquerque and worked for the New Mexico Tumor Registry, the Department of Energy, and Sandia National Laboratories.
Bill was an avid runner and even competed in races up the La Luz Trail. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts, coached youth soccer with his brother-in-law, Larry Brooks, and became a soccer referee. He attended more than 1,000 Lobo basketball games in the Pit, as well as a fair number in Johnson Gym before the Pit was built.
The memorial service date will be announced later.
