Virginia West

Virginia Lee "Geege" West (née Ortman), known as G Unit to her grandchildren, age 99, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2025, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Born on May 11, 1926, in Chillicothe, Ohio, Virginia was the daughter of Ralph and Virginia Ortman. She spent her early years on the family farm in Chillicothe, where Sunday meals with loved ones became a treasured tradition she carried throughout her life.

Virginia earned an Associate's Degree from Bliss Business College-an admirable accomplishment for a young woman of her time. In 1952, she married David West, and they shared 41 years of marriage until his passing. Altogether, she worked 20 years for the state of Ohio, both at the Department of Natural Resources, and later, the Department of Developmental Disabilities Council.

Dedicated to both family and community, Virginia volunteered with preschoolers at Bethel United Methodist Church and was an active member of the Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority, contributing to numerous philanthropic causes. Her generosity and commitment left a lasting impression on those around her.

A talented seamstress, Virginia took pride in sewing stylish outfits for her three daughters. She also had a passion for gardening, nurturing vibrant blooms wherever she lived. A devoted reader, she often completed three books a week well into her later years. During her 15 years at Paloma Landing in Albuquerque, she enjoyed playing Euchre and dominoes with friends. The companionship of fellow residents and the kindness of staff brought her great joy.

Virginia is lovingly remembered by her daughters: Nora West (Frank Gregory preceded in death), Jan Teater, and Elaine Honeck (Tim); eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and her sister Helen Richardson. She was preceded in death by her husband David West; parents Ralph and Virginia Ortman; and brother Jack Ortman.

Virginia's long life was marked by devotion to family, generosity of spirit, and quiet strength. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.
