It is with deep sadness the family of Verdie Raper announces his death. He was born in Eureka, Utah, raised in Victor, Colorado and met the love of his life, Catherine Huber, in Silver City, New Mexico. He is survived by his children Trina Raper and Guy Raper, grandsons Danny Cron, Rob Cron (Reina Urban), and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years Catherine Raper and his eldest son, Gary Raper.
Recruited by the LA Dodgers in 1948 and sent to play catcher on their farm team in Los Alamos, his day job was with Zia Corp. In 1949 wanting a better day job he announced he was returning to Silver City. Thus, he was hired by Los Alamos Labs as the home team, the Los Alamos Bombers, still needed a catcher.
In 1954 he joined the Pierotti Clowns, a 5-man fast pitch softball team. For 25 years they played any 9-man team daring to challenge them. They lost 25 games in total, raised close to $250,000 for the Los Alamos Kiwanis scholarship fund, and helped turn that military installation into a hometown by providing summer family entertainment.
Above all that defined Verdie: his deep love and loyalty to Catherine and his family, his never-ending care for his disabled son, Gary, and his contributions to his community; Verdie was a gentleman. His was a quiet presence, who never failed to recognize others and who told everyone who helped him, "thank you."
The family wishes to recognize everyone at Retreat Health in Rio Rancho, Enable Home Health Care, and La Luz Hospice for their wonderful care. Without your loving hearts, and deep knowledge, his last months would not have been as joyful and loving. The family is so grateful.
