Dr. Thomas H. Kirby, affectionately known as Tom, passed away on October 29, 2024 at the age of 72. Born on November 10, 1951, in Saint Louis, Missouri, he dedicated his life to both his profession and his family, leaving behind a legacy that will be truly cherished.

An accomplished radiation physicist and professor, Dr. Kirby significantly contributed to the field of medical physics during his distinguished career, which included tenures at the University of Texas at MD Anderson and the University of New Mexico. He was part of the prestigious accreditation survey team for the National Cancer Institute at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, solidifying his reputation as a leading expert in his discipline. Tom's educational journey was marked by excellence as he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in mathematics from Southern Illinois University and followed with a Ph.D. in Radiation Physics from the University of Texas. He was also a member of the American Association of Physicists. Tom also had numerous publications and patents relating to his work. After retirement, he pursued his passion for culinary arts, obtaining a degree from Central New Mexico Community College.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Tom was a warm and giving soul, always eager to lend a helping hand. He had a fondness for cooking, delighting his family and colleagues with homemade snacks, particularly his beloved chex mix and sweet treats, which he often shared with students to brighten their days. He also enjoyed making his chicken wings and experimenting to perfect his wing sauce. Tom was an active member of the Alzheimer's foundation. Known for his fun-loving spirit, he built a cherished reputation as a soccer coach in Albuquerque, where he inspired many young athletes with his passion and dedication to the sport.

Tom was not only a brilliant mind but also a devoted family man. He met his beloved wife, Lourdes, at the University of Louisiana Medical School in New Orleans, and they shared a deep bond throughout their lives together. He took immense pride in his role as a father to his children, who brought great joy to his life. His love extended to his grandchildren, Asher, Oliver, and Kody, who made him beam with pride as the best grandpa one could imagine. He also loved his dog, Patches.

A man of many interests, Tom found joy in the outdoors, embracing hobbies such as fly fishing, camping, and hiking. He often joked about not needing to bring food on camping trips because he would catch fish, yet he always included hot dogs just in case. He enjoyed woodworking, crafting special items, like a special "sweetheart" bed frame for his daughters, and relished family game nights filled with laughter and his signature dad jokes. His passion for astronomy and literature provided him with endless enjoyment, while riding his motorcycle brought him a sense of freedom.

Dr. Kirby is survived by his loving wife, Lourdes Kirby; daughter Alexandra Kirby Griego and her husband Matt; grandchildren Asher Kirby, Oliver Griego, and Kody Griego; brothers Donald and Michael Kirby; and sister Susan Young. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Marie Kirby, and his daughter, Katherine Kirby-Parker.

As we remember Tom, we honor a remarkable man whose kindness, humor, and dedication to family, friends, and his profession left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His memories will continue to inspire and comfort his loved ones as they navigate life without him. Dr. Thomas H. Kirby will be profoundly missed but forever remembered with love.
