Thomas Coffman, age 93, died on Monday February 23, 2026. He passed suddenly and peacefully at home with his wife Sally. Tom was born in Edinburg, Virginia and was the youngest of 11 children. He was raised by his father and older sisters after the death of his mother. He joined the United States Air Force in 1949 at the age of 17 serving in the Korean war and later the Vietnam war as a B-52 Tailgunner. During his military career, Tom was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross among other military honors. Tom retired in 1971 and began a second career at Sandia National Labs, finally retiring in 1995.
Tom married the love of his life, Sally, on August 31, 1956, and they enjoyed 69 years of marriage together. After Tom retired from the Air Force the family settled in Albuquerque. During their retirement Tom and Sally enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, and working in their garden but they didn't let retirement slow them down. Instead, they used the time to seek out adventure, including taking many trips to visit theme parks and hundreds of roller coaster rides, Tom always believed the old wooden coasters were best.
Tom's other passion included restoring and driving hot-rods. Throughout his life, Tom was never without a muscle car in his garage. From his 1949 Mercury and beyond, Tom loved to work on his cars and famously kept them in pristine condition. In his last years, he spent many hours dedicated to restoring his 1969 Mustang with his son Dirk.
Tom leaves behind his wife Sally, son, Dirk Coffman, daughter, Tanya Greene and husband Randy Greene, and son Scott Coffman as well as grandchildren, Colt Greene, Brittany Coffman and husband Ross Clark, and Summer Greene and husband Stephen Denney, great grandchildren Emery Greene, Amaya Greene and Charlotte Clark.
