Susan Viancour Martin, 64, beloved wife, devoted mother, and true heart passed away peacefully December 3, 2018 surrounded by her loving family.
She entered this world on July 22, 1954 in Hampton, VA born to Richard and Barbara Viancour. Growing up in Hampton with her brother, Rick, she attended Hampton High School graduating in 1972. After graduating from Smithdeal-Massey Business College in Richmond, Susan was employed as a legal assistant before taking an analyst position with the Department of Defense at Fort Monroe, VA. In 1985 Susan married Bill Martin of Hampton and in 1987 gave birth to their daughter, McKenzie. Shortly thereafter, Bill's corporate assignments would take Susan to London and Houston in the critical role of full-time Mom to McKenzie. Besides her devotion to family, Susan had two passions, tennis and travel. Living in Wimbledon Village for three years was just the beginning of a thirty-year love affair with the sport. In Houston, she participated in numerous HLTA and USTA events and developed many lasting friendships. Susan traveled extensively but she was an "island girl" at heart. She loved the Greek islands and the folks there loved her right back. The last five years of their twenty-five years in Houston was spent living on the beach of Galveston Island where, once again, she made many great friends. In 2015, Bill and Susan moved to northern New Mexico to be closer to their son, Ryan, and granddaughter, Allison. In addition to the wonderful times with Ryan and Allison, it was only a short hop to San Francisco, so she could visit her career girl, McKenzie, frequently. After a few months in New Mexico, it became clear why people call it the "Land of Enchantment". The people, the scenery, the art, and sunsets made this move a wonderful last chapter, it was just far too short. Susan was famous for her radiant smile. Her smile was always a beacon for her family but her magic extended beyond family, as evidenced by the many friends she made wherever in the world her travels took her.
Susan is survived by her husband of thirty-three years, William P. Martin of Placitas, N.M.; daughter, Katherine McKenzie Martin, of San Francisco, CA; son, Lt. Col. Ryan T. McGuire; granddaughter, Allison McGuire, of Albuquerque, NM; mother, Barbara Ball Farrand, of Hampton, VA; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Laura Viancour and nephew, John Viancour of Williamsburg, VA; Dora Viancour of Poquoson, VA; sister-in-law, Sherian Martin, of Portsmouth, VA; niece, Kelly Goldberg, of Smithfield, VA; nephews, James B. Martin and Scott B. Martin, of Portsmouth, VA.
In lieu of flowers the family would prefer donations in Susan's name to Shriner's Hospital for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
