Sophie John Collaros, 75, passed away on November 16, 2025 in her hometown of Albuquerque. She is survived by four siblings and ten nieces and nephews.
As a former anthropologist in Greece and at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, Sophie restored massive pottery and delicate figurines with saint-like patience, steady hands, and a deep respect for the stories they carried. She treated people the same way, as unique and precious. Sophie's kindness was bottomless, her smile contagious, and her wit accompanied by a twinkle in her eye.
In her nearly two decades at Susie Rayos Marmon Elementary School, Sophie was a dedicated educator and mentor for new teachers. Her commitment to excellence was only surpassed by her care for young lives. Small in stature herself, Sophie adored children and penguins. These birds known for their loyalty, resilience, and ability to weather life's harshest conditions with quiet determination are a perfect reflection of her own spirit.
A loving sister, devoted aunt, and dedicated member of the Greek Orthodox Church, Sophie lived her values through faith, service, and steadfast love.
