Shannon Lynn Salyer, 64, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, went to be with the Lord and her family on January 28, 2024. She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Hood, and her granddaughter, Miranda Martinez. Shannon was preceded in death by her parents, Cleston and Elsie Salyer, her brother, Stanley Salyer, and her son, Justin Hood.
Shannon was born on November 5, 1959. She was raised in the North Valley of Albuquerque and remained a resident of New Mexico throughout her life. Shannon cherished her relationship with her father, Cleston, and acquired his kindness and empathy. She got her passion for politics and her strong work ethic from her mother, Elsie. She always held a special place in her heart for her brother, Stanley. From a young age, Shannon had a great love for animals and grew up taking care of her family's horses. She spent many summers in Indiana, where her mother was from, and always spoke fondly of her Indiana family.
Shannon graduated from Sandia High School in 1978 and later attended college in New Mexico and Texas. She met many of her lifelong friends during this time. Following college, Shannon had a highly successful 25-year career with the State of New Mexico working in the Child Support Division. Throughout this time, she was able to help countless families navigate challenging situations and always went above and beyond to provide meaningful solutions for them. Her achievements in her career were something that she was very proud of. After retiring, she continued her passion for helping others by working as a paralegal for the Second Judicial District Court of New Mexico.
Her proudest role in life was being the mother to her two beautiful children. Shannon welcomed her firstborn, Justin, on June 1, 1986. They shared a close and unique bond, including a love for animals and banter about politics. Her daughter, Stephanie, arrived on February 8, 1992. They shared a passion for travel, keeping up with current events, and for the mental health field. Justin and Stephanie were proud of all that their mom had accomplished in her life and always admired her qualities that brought out the best version of herself. Both children carried Shannon's beautiful qualities into their daily lives, including their mom's kindness, humor, and overall love for life.
Shannon spent much of her time traveling, including many trips to Hawaii, which was her favorite place to visit. She also loved going to see her children in the different cities and countries that they lived in. Shannon enjoyed the company of her family and close friends. She was also always the first to strike up conversations with others while out and about in her own company. She adored her three cats and her dog.
Her grandchild, Miranda, was born on August 28, 2014. She loved her dearly and always looked forward to their time together. Shannon remained close with her ex-husband, Randy, and his partner, Renee, and always appreciated their inclusivity and kindness.
Later in life, Shannon was open about her challenges with her mental health and was always willing to be a resource for anyone navigating a similar journey.
Shannon was a fighter until the very end and no matter the challenge that was placed before her, she would find a way to approach it with 'her' laugh and a smile on her face. Her cheekiness, friendliness, and zest for life will be greatly missed. Shannon, may you rest in peace and know you were greeted with the biggest hug by Justin and your family.
