Sergeant Major Lewis "Lew" Douglas Izard

July 24, 1940 — June 27, 2025

Sergeant Major Lewis "Lew" Douglas Izard, 84, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away on June 27, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.

Born on July 24, 1940, in Jackson, Mississippi, to Sally (Shinski) and Earl Izard, Lew joined the United States Marine Corps in 1958. He rose swiftly through the ranks over a distinguished 30-year career, ultimately achieving the rank of Sergeant Major.

Throughout his illustrious military service, Lew traveled the world - to places many only dream of, and some few have ever heard of. He was recognized time and again for his leadership, communication, strategic planning, and ability to bring people together to achieve shared goals.

After retiring from the military, Lew moved to Albuquerque to give back to the community. For 17 years he was a teacher at Rio Grande High School in the South Valley, where he served as a ROTC instructor and history teacher. Lew was passionate about helping students gain knowledge and wisdom to better themselves and their futures. Drawn to people and deeply invested in younger generations, he led by example and often reminded his students, "Integrity is not just a small town in Texas." He was an incredible leader, mentor, and friend to all who knew him.

Though not all related by blood, Lew proudly took on the role of father and grandfather to many. His presence will be deeply missed by all who call him Dad, Papa, Grandad, or Friend.

Lew was preceded in death by his parents, his older brother Earl Dean Izard, and many other loved ones. He is survived by his brother, John Izard of Dallas; his children, daughter Andreinna Izard Bost of Albuquerque and son William Izard; and his wife, Margaret Izard of Houston. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren - Kathryn Michelle Gentsch, Kelsey Anne Allison, Trevor Lewis Izard, Brianna Jean Izard, and Aaron David Izard - as well as great-granddaughters Elizabeth Grace Allison, Emma Faith Allison, and Ensley Joy Allison.

Lew will be laid to rest in a private ceremony alongside his military brothers and sisters at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 PM on July 12, 2025, at The Canyon Club at Four Hills, and all are welcome. Military brothers and sisters, golfing buddies, former students, and friends - please join us to share happy memories and stories of a life well lived.

Lew was full of joy, and this gathering is one of celebration, not sorrow. Per his wishes, please do not wear black - instead, wear something that reminds you of him, and come ready to laugh, reminisce, and raise a glass.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Boys Town, the Marine Corps League Foundation, or Roadrunner Food Bank - organizations close to Lew's heart.
