Minister Selma (Nichols) Rogers, 84, transitioned from this life to her eternal home on October 30, 2026, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Born February 18, 1942, in Paxico, Kansas, to James Samuel and Florence Ethel (Welch) Nichols, she was one of six children. Selma had a true heart for serving others and being a blessing from God. This was reflected in her choice to care for patients as a registered nurse for many years, until an on-the-job injury kept her from continuing. She then returned to school, majored in accounting, and became an accountant in the prosthetics department at the VA hospital.
In 1975, Selma married the love of her life, Bishop Byron Rogers, Sr. Together they raised four children, Jonita, Larry Jr., Byron Michael Jr., and Wesley, and shared 50 years of marriage until Bishop Rogers' passing. Side by side, they served the Lord not only in their church home but also in city missions such as Sister Dolly's Homeless Ministry. Selma was always service-oriented, full of love and energy for the Lord, and worked tirelessly for others.
After retirement, when Bishop Rogers founded Powerhouse Church of God on the west side of Albuquerque, First Lady Selma served at his side and helped found a school serving grades K-12, where she became a teacher loved by all her students. She was also ordained as a minister and led monthly women's Bible studies. Together they served the community through Powerhouse for 19 years and supported countless area churches.
Selma is survived by her children, Jonita, Larry Jr., Byron Michael Jr. (Felicia), and Wesley (Crystal); her sister, Carmane; her brother, Dwayne; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bishop Byron Rogers, Sr.; her parents; her brother, Donald; and her sisters, Jan and Vaida.
A celebration of Selma's life will be held Friday, November 20, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at New Life Church of God, 3400 Aztec Rd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87107. She will be buried at Santa Fe National Cemetery beside her husband.
