Rufus Doyle Meadows was born July 20, 1930 in Amarillo, Texas to E.W. and Janie Meadows.
He grew up in the Texas panhandle along with brother Charles and sister Billie, attending school in Skellytown and White Deer where he played football, basketball and baseball. He married his high school sweetheart, Junie Shipley, on September 3, 1950. Doyle served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict and later graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in geology. He and Junie had two children, Steve and Johna.
For many years, he worked as a field geologist for the Soil Conservation Service in Oklahoma and New Mexico. Doyle enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and taking vacations with his family.
We remember many good times in Colorado and weekends at the lake. Music of any kind was a great love of Doyle’s, along with good food. He retired in 1995 after 30 years of service.
In later years, after Junie’s death, he married Lydia Martinez. They lived an active life full of dancing and music.
Doyle died on December 7, 2020.
He is survived by son Steve and Karen Meadows, daughter Johna Abbott and Sandy Sexton, grandson Nick and Erin Abbott and two great grandchildren, Lucas and Quinn Abbott. Lydia’s children Belinda Griego, Roger Garcia and Nora and Chris Dias were an important part of his life and he loved them dearly.
He will be missed by his family and a host of friends.
