Ronald Montoya

Ronald Montoya, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, peacefully passed away at home on September 12, 2025, surrounded by his family. He is now at home with his Lord and Savior.

Ron was the beloved husband of Margie Montoya, with whom he was approaching their 60th wedding anniversary. He is survived by his daughters - Yvette, Ramona and Theresa, sons-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his father, Gabe; mother, Ramona; and sister, Sylvia.

A graduate of Albuquerque High School he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Economics & Government at UNM. He was elected to the 1969 State Constitutional Convention as one of seventy delegates to help rewrite the state constitution. He received the National Urban Fellowship in 1973-1974 which allowed him to attain his Master's Degree at Yale University and Occidental College in Urban Administration. In 1976 he became the Director of Office of Senior Affairs. He was a rare combination of advocate, administrator, creative force and crusader. Under his leadership the Office of Senior Affairs grew rapidly and expended from two services and eight employees to a nationally recognized program of more than thirty services and 190 employees. He helped create New Mexico Senior Olympics, Foster Grandparents and five senior centers. Ron always acknowledged that his achievements were only possible through the hard work of dedicated, innovative and devoted employees whom he also called friends. A member of the Senior Citizen Hall of Fame, he helped shape the present-day senior landscape in Albuquerque and after retirement served on the Governor's Policy Advisory Committee to the Aging and Long-Term Services Department.

The family thanks relatives and caregivers from Amada for their support in his final months.

Ron's legacy is one of love, dedication, and service-to God, family, friends, and community. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

There will be a Memorial Service for Ron on September 25, 2025, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm followed by a Reception from 12:00 pm -2:00 pm at FRENCH- Westside. Pallbearers are will be Alexander Chesley, Michael Chesely, Jack Salmon, Josiah Salmon, James Sena, and James Sena Jr.
