Ronald Vernon Bodo

March 8, 1939 — August 16, 2018

Ron Bodo, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, passed away peacefully at home in Tijeras, NM on August 16, 2018.  He was born March 8, 1939 in Durango, CO to Vernon Ignacio and Harriett Beatrice Rowe Bodo.  He grew up in Durango and, as a very young boy, started helping his grandfather and uncle on their Ridges Basin Ranch outside of Durango.  A portion of this ranch is now a part of Lake Nighthorse.

In 1955, the family moved to Albuquerque where Ron attended Highland High School for his Jr. and Sr. year.  He attended the University of NM until he was drafted into the Army during the Berlin Wall crisis and was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany where he worked as a medical records clerk in the civilian hospital there.  Upon his Army discharge, he completed his accounting degree at Ft. Lewis College in Durango, where, since 1974, the family has established a Bodo Scholarship Fund.

He worked for Sandia National Laboratory in Albuquerque performing government contract audits for 13 years.  Following his early retirement from Sandia, he moved to Texas where, for 15 years, he worked for Halliburton in the corporate office in Dallas as an Internal Auditor which enabled Ron and Carroll to travel all over the world.

Having learned to ski at a very young age, he was an avid and accomplished skier. Along with competitive racing and being a ski instructor in high school and college, he was on the Safety Team, and Ski Patrol at NM and Colorado ski areas.

Ron loved music and enjoyed playing a four-string guitar, a ukulele, and the harmonica.  In addition, he loved helping family, friends and even strangers in need.  As a small example, during snow storms, he could often be seen plowing out neighbors with his beloved antique Kubota tractor. Helping others brought him great joy.

He is survived by his wife, Carroll; son, Michael Bodo and wife, Christine; daughter, Cindy Bodo Harkins and husband, Dakota; step-son, Michael Jack and wife, Dawn; step-daughter, Jami Eggleston and husband, Barry.  He is also survived by his brother, Randy Bodo, and his sister, Kristen Bodo Smith and husband, Tony Phillips; as well as 13 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to family, he will be greatly missed by the numerous friends with whom Ron and Carroll developed long-lasting relationships during their 37 years of marriage.   Ron’s friends would agree he was a very unique and caring human being.  The world is a better place because he lived.

Private family interment will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery on November 2, 2018.  There will be a celebration of Ron’s life at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 6100 Indian School Rd. N.E., Albuquerque, NM  87110, or online at LLS.org.
