Robert F. Gardner, beloved father, brother, and uncle, passed away March 30, 2026, at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Bob was born on February 3, 1940, in Erie, Pennsylvania to Evelyn and William Gardner. He was the youngest of 8 siblings and spent summers working on his brother-in-law’s farm. He lettered in basketball, track, and drama in high school.
Bob moved to Albuquerque in the early 1960s. He followed his parents and older sister Evelyn. Initially, Bob worked at Continental Airlines as a baggage handler while he found his footing in New Mexico. Ultimately, Bob found his calling at Sandia Laboratories as a videographer. He had many amazing experiences while at the laboratories including documenting various trainings, tests, and promotional efforts. He retired in 2002.
Bob married Charlotte Rae Newton in April of 1965. His daughter Mary arrived in June of 1966. He continued playing basketball and softball in various leagues in Albuquerque until he turned his attention to coaching little league. He also raised a couple of quarter horses and continued his love farming by caring for friends’ alfalfa fields… that was where he first taught Mary to steer a tractor when she was 5.
In his early 50s, he bought a mountain bike and got hooked on riding in the Rio Grande bosque. One of his favorite biking tales was about landing on his feet after getting thrown over the handlebars.
Bob lived a life full of spirit and joy. He befriended everyone he met and offered a helping hand or a provided a listening ear.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Gardner (Sheree Anderson); his sister, Ellie Sebring; his cousin who was more like a son, Tony Huntsberger (Francis); his cousin, Karla Bressan; and a wonderful circle of nieces and nephews who adored him — Krissie Bressan, Katie Bressan, Tommy Bressan, Betsy Loesch, Glenn Sebring, and Cyd Sebring — along with many others who were lucky enough to call him family. He is predeceased by his wife, Charlotte R. Gardner; parents, William and Evelyn Gardner; and 6 of his 7 siblings.
Bob was the kind of man who made every room a little warmer and every gathering a little brighter. He leaves behind not grief, but gratitude — for a life well-lived and a love that will never fade.
A memorial service will be held Friday, April 17, 2026, 11:00 a.m., at FRENCH - University. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Paws and Stripes.
Rest easy, Bob. The game was a good one.
