We are saddened to share that our beloved Rita Medina, 84, passed away on February 15th, 2026. She was at peace in her home, surrounded by loved ones.
Rita was born on October 9th, 1941, in Las Vegas, NM, to Juanita and Ignacio Gutierrez. She spent most of her childhood there and graduated from Las Vegas Robertson HS. Eventually, she settled in Albuquerque, NM, where she spent most of her adult life. Rita was strong and determined. She had a successful career as a loan officer while raising two daughters as a single mother, and later retired from the federal government.
After retirement, Rita relished being able to spend more quality time with family. She loved being with her siblings and spending time with her many nieces and nephews. If she wasn't at one of their homes, she was chatting with them on the phone.
As she got older, she expressed gratitude for good health and energy to spend time with her family. She always said that her greatest joy was being a grandmother, taking care of her grandchildren, and enjoying their company.
Rita had an amazing sense of humor and a quick wit. She was always ready for lighthearted jokes and teasing, and loved to laugh loudly and often. She was also a great listener and was always available to offer supportive, loving advice.
Rita lived a spiritual life, starting each day in meditation and prayer. She set a good example for her children and grandchildren.
Her presence was immense, and the void without her will be hard to heal.
She is preceded in death by her parents and 9 older siblings. She is survived by her children, Melinda Ritchie and son-in-law Marshall, and Reina Baron and son-in-law Travis, and by her grandchildren, Kyle Ritchie, Emily Baron and Kaleb Baron, and by many nieces and nephews.
Rita did not like somber gatherings and wanted to have a celebration of life. We will honor her wishes.
Services will be on March 14th, 2026, at 12 pm at the French Funeral Home in Wyoming. We will start with a rosary and funeral service, followed by a celebration of life and lunch reception.
The opportunity to share in her celebration with a story, memory, or photos will be offered and appreciated.
