Richard Joseph Hunter, born July 17, 1935, in New Britain, Connecticut, passed away on July 15, 2025, in Albuquerque, NM. He served with honor in the U.S. Navy, enlisting on April 5, 1954, and achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander before his discharge on October 31, 1978. His commitment to service and leadership marked a distinguished career in the Navy.
He entered NESEP (Navy Enlisted Scientific Education Program) and attended UNC - Chapel Hill, earning his commission and engineering degree.
He served as the XO on the USS Litchfield County littoral combat transport, US Pacific Fleet Staff (COMSERVPAC), Advisor to Ethiopian Navy in Massawa, Ethiopia, US Naval Forces Europe (CINCUSNAVEUR), and 3M Officer on the USS Saratoga Aircraft Carrier.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Anna Mysliwiec; his sisters, Doris, Agnes, and Margaret, and his eldest son, Gregory Joseph Hunter. He is survived by his son, James (J.J.) Hunter and many nieces and nephews.
Mass will be held on Monday, August 4, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., at The Shrine of Saint Bernadette, 11509 Indian School Rd. - Albuquerque, NM 87112, followed by a Graveside Service at the Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe at 1:30 p.m.
