Paul A. Sanchez, age 76 and born in Albuquerque, New Mexico passed away on July 15, 2025. He was a devoted husband, proud father, cherished grandfather and a dear friend to many. His absence leaves behind a profound sense of loss-and a lasting legacy of love, laughter, and kindness.
Paul was married to his wife, Kae Sanchez, for nearly 48 beautiful years--a journey filled with love and countless memories. Together, they raised three sons: Rick Montoya (deceased 2016), Marc Montoya (LeDawn), and Keith Sanchez (Abigail).
He was a fiercely proud grandfather to: Lane Montoya (and partner Megan Nicholson), Isaac Montoya, Madison Montoya, Lorelei Sanchez, and AJ (Adrian Joseph) Sanchez--each bringing immeasurable joy to his life.
Paul shared a lifelong kinship with his sisters: Sylvia Wortzman (Paul Wortzman) and Elaine Fordice (Jim Fordice). He also treasured the memory of his brother and fishing partner Charlie Sanchez, who passed away earlier this year. Paul was the son of the late Charles and Mary Sanchez whose deep Albuquerque roots helped to shape the principles he carried throughout his life. He had high respect for his father, who was a survivor of the Bataan Death March and his time in POW in World War II.
Paul attended school in Albuquerque, graduating from Valley High School where he was active in sports and was particularly good in the pole vault event. After he received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree at UNM, he began a career at the UNM Bookstore. Paul was a die-hard Lobo fan and was looking forward to this year's basketball/football season.
During the college phase of his life, he interrupted his education to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps. While he seldom discussed this period of his life, Kae holds a distinct memory of taking a day on their honeymoon trip to visit Camp Pendleton, where they spent a day gathering insights into the marches, the training, the essential equipment, and the formidable challenges of boot camp. He was proud to be a part of the Marine Corps.
After retiring from the University of New Mexico, Paul embraced his days with heart and enthusiasm-spending time fishing, golfing, savoring bowls of posole and backyard bird watching with Kae. Their backyard became a haven for feathered visitors, curious critters, and spoiled turtles.
Paul will be terribly missed, yet the warmth he shared lives on in every story told and every smile remembered. His spirit endures in the hearts of all who knew him. We are forever grateful that he was a part of our lives.
