Paul Henry Merritt, born on December 31, 1937, in Rochester, New York, gracefully concluded his earthly journey on June 6, 2026, after a courageous battle with dementia, kidney failure, and heart failure. Though his physical presence has departed, his spirit continues to illuminate the lives of all who knew him.

Paul was the cherished son of Russell Seaton Merritt and Irma Ina Merritt. He was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Earl, of Silver City, NM, leaving behind a legacy deeply rooted in love and family dedication.

Paul's life was enriched by his devoted wife of 59 years, Laura Lea (Turbiville) Merritt, whom he married in 1967 in El Paso, Texas. Together, they built a life of love and happiness, a testament to their enduring partnership. His legacy continues through his daughters, Rhonda Corvalan of Huntsville, AL, and Renee Twaddle, with husband Steven, of Stephenville, TX. He leaves behind five grandchildren, Joshua Twaddle and wife, Katherine, Elise Arroyo and husband, Jordan, Lucas Twaddle and wife, Karla, Xander Corvalan, and Coleen Corvalan, along with two great-grandchildren, Adam and Mia Arroyo. Their lives are a tribute to the values and wisdom Paul instilled.

Paul's academic journey began at Western High School in Silver City, NM, graduating in 1955. His pursuit of knowledge led him to New Mexico State University, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. Furthering his education at the University of Texas, he took a class in lasers, where he serendipitously met Laura. His academic achievements culminated in a Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, a testament to his dedication and brilliance.

Paul's commitment to service was evident in his military career with the United States Air Force. His journey began when, upon finding the Navy office closed, he crossed the street and enlisted in the Air Force. He served with distinction from 1961 to 1965 and continued in civil service from 1966 to 1981.

A gifted mechanical engineer, Paul's career spanned several esteemed organizations, including General Electric, the U.S. Air Force, Hughes Aircraft, and Boeing-SVS. His passion for education extended into his role as an adjunct professor at the University of New Mexico, where he inspired young minds until 2010. As a consultant for the Shafer Corporation until 2019, Paul shared his expertise and wisdom generously.

An active member of Asbury United Methodist Church for over 51 years, Paul served in numerous roles, including the Finance Committee, Church Council, and as Director of the Asbury Cafe. His leadership in selecting recipients for the Emily Sannebeck Scholarship was marked by compassion and insight.

Paul's hands were rarely idle, whether fixing projects around the house or crafting with the lathe inherited from his father. His two books on Beam Control reflect his intellectual curiosity and dedication to his field. Known for his kind, gentle, and humble spirit, Paul was a beacon of love and laughter. His family cherishes memories of his sense of humor, fierce loyalty, and unwavering devotion.
