Patricia M. Gallacher died at home on 5/19/25 surrounded by her family. She was 90 years old.
Mary Patricia Mebus was born in Detroit, MI in 1934 to German and Irish parents. She grew up with a large and dynamic family. She loved playing basketball and field hockey in high school. Patricia attended the University of Detroit and obtained a Bachelor Degree in History. She met her husband, Patrick Gallacher in college, who earned a PhD in Medieval Literature. They married, had five daughters, and eventually moved to Albuquerque in 1972, where Patrick taught at the University of New Mexico. Patricia often said she and Patrick were true partners in life.
Patricia led an active life, full of family, friends, travel, tennis, bridge, cooking, entertaining and gardening. Highlights over the years include the ever expanding family and numerous reunions in her home state Michigan; the witty and irrepressible English department community at the University of New Mexico; and many fabulous trips to Europe.
The parties! Patricia loved attending them, but mostly she loved hosting them. Stinky cheese parties (fresh from Paris!) Murder Mystery weekends, Easter Bonnet parades, holiday and birthday parties. Her friends and family never tired as she worked her way through Julia Child's cookbook among many others.
Patricia was a genuine person, a great listener, a keeper of secrets. She offered support without judgement, guidance when needed and unconditional love. She had a cheerful spark and befriended people everywhere. Family will recall discussions with her about history, travel, books, current events, religion and philosophy for years to come.
Even with the challenges of aging, Patricia showed remarkable acceptance, courage and tenacity. She maintained a deep Catholic faith throughout her life. Patricia continued to find joy in daily life - checking on her garden, talking with her beloved grandchildren and drinking Albariño.
Patricia's signature exclamation: "How marvelous!" reflects her life philosophy- which always enthusiastic. She leaves a legacy of joy, optimism and determination.
Patricia is predeceased by her husband, Patrick Gallacher and her granddaughter, Rachel Atkin; her sisters, Clare Kay and Erika Maguire; brother, Phillip Mebus; and nephew, Phil Mebus III. She is survived by her sister, Kathleen Toth; her daughters, Gail Gess, Kathleen Atkin, Annie Ramirez, Francie Anderson, and Sarah Shepard; her sons-in-law, Steve Gess, Greg Atkin, Ruben Ramirez, Charles Anderson, and Jim Shepard; her grandchildren, Emma Kaufman, Ronnie Kaufman, Michael Atkin, David Atkin, Rebecca Atkin, Andres Ramirez, Ethan Shepard, Lilly Shepard, Lucy Shepard, and Jack Shepard.
