Norma Joyce Scroggins, passed away peacefully surrounded by her daughters on August 2, 2025, in Albuquerque. She was born on July 18, 1923, in Morris, Oklahoma, and led a life marked by devotion, humor, and an unwavering commitment to her family and faith.
Joyce graduated from Okmulgee High School in 1941, where she was a proud member of the honors society. In 1943, she married the love of her life Jackie Don Scroggins (Jack) that lasted over 54 years until his death in 1997. During World War II, she worked various clerical jobs in Oklahoma before making her way to New Mexico. Joyce always placed the utmost importance on her role as a mother, and took pride in staying home to raise her children. She was very proud of her Muscogee Creek Indian heritage.
She was a longtime active member of Hoffmantown Church. Her strong Christian faith was a cornerstone of her life, transforming her into a prayer warrior who inspired those around her. Her sense of humor endured to the very end, bringing joy and laughter to her family.
Joyce cherished the moments spent with her family, whether through travels, game nights filled with dominoes, or simply engaging in crossword puzzles. She took pride in her appearance and always wanted to look her best. Many of her fondest memories included going on vacations with her daughters. She was very adaptable and was able to make the best of any situation.
Her family serves as a testament to her love and dedication. She is survived by her daughters Julia (Patrick) Gore, Janna (Don) Holmes, and Jeanetta (Jeff) McElwain, along with her seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law Barbara Boeken, and her nieces, nephews, and cousins. Joyce’s steadfast love will remain a guiding light for them.
Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jack D. Scroggins, her son John Randall Scroggins, her mother Lora Patton Jennings, her father Marvin Francis Bowden, and her sister Wanda June Zellner.
She will be remembered as a Christian wife and mother. She said “My family has been my life and my greatest joy has been the knowledge that we will all meet in Heaven.”
In her passing, Joyce leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and joy, touching the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to AmberCare Hospice and the caregivers at Casa Subina Assisted Living for their compassionate support during this time.
A private family service will be held at a later date at her request. She will be laid to rest with her husband and son in Okmulgee, Oklahoma.
