Obituary

Listen to Obituary

Morris Gerard Chavez, 62 (a month shy of his December 28 Birthday), of Albuquerque, NM, went home to be with the Lord on November 28, 2025. He passed away peacefully after a long battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). He was surrounded by the love of his brother, Anthony Chavez, and the love and prayers of all his family and friends. Jesus, Mary, I love you. Save souls.

Morris was born in Albuquerque, NM, on December 28, 1962. He attended Bellehaven Elementary School, Grant Middle School, and Sandia High School. He earned his master's degree from New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) in 1991. During his first year at NMHU, he was asked to become a member of Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society. Being a member was considered to be one of the highest academic awards that could be given to a student in recognition of outstanding academic work during their freshman year. Morris was proud of this accomplishment, but the proudest were his parents.

While in High School, Morris worked with the Albuquerque Dukes Baseball and at Alpha Beta Grocery Store. He loved driving his cars especially his black Firebird and his Jeep. After his college career, Morris worked at various places as a Financial Advisor. Eventually, he owned his own business in the finance industry. Even after he was diagnosed with ALS, he still offered his family financial advice.

Morris loved fishing and riding his bike. He was a faithful fan of the Dallas Cowboys, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Notre Dame. He loved to travel and one of his travels took him and his Dad to watch a Notre Dame game and a Chicago Cubs baseball game. He traveled to various places to see his favorite band, Cheap Trick (including Amsterdam and London). Another trip he made, before ALS made it impossible for him to travel, was to Europe and the Vatican where he caught a glimpse of the Pope. Morris always had a faithful and generous heart. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends who are family. Our family is especially grateful for the care he received from Francine Jones from the Bellamah House, and for all the support he received from the NM ALS organization especially Michelle.

He is survived by Estella B. Chavez (Mother), Anthony Gerard Chavez (Brother), Sandra-Lin Chavez (Sister-In-law by name Sister by heart), Myra Geralyn Chavez (Sister), Lucas Esquibel (Son), Anthony Joseph (TJ) Chavez II, (Nephew), Dustin Anthony Chavez I, (Nephew), Michael Morris-Anthony Chavez (Nephew and God Son), Brandon Fresquez (God Son), his Uncle Silvestre Baca, his Aunt Mena Baca, and several cousins and dear friends who are family. Morris was preceded in death by his Father, Tony J. Chavez in 2018, his Maternal Grandparents: Jose Ynez and Josefita Baca (from Jarales, NM), Paternal Grandparents: Daniel and Martha Chavez (from Bernalillo, NM).

Family and Friends may visit on Thursday, December 18, 2025 from 6:00-7:30 pm at FRENCH-Lomas.  A Rosary will follow from 7:30-8:00pm. A mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, December 19, 2025, from 11:00-12:00pm at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church (at the corner of Lomas and Tennessee - 811 Guaymas Pl. NE). Interment will follow at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery (7999 Wyoming Blvd., NE). Lunch reception following the grave side services at Post 69 (9000 4th St., NW). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ALS New Mexico: https://newmexicoals.org/.

Angel's Farewell

Gentle Angel, take their hand.

Guide them to the promised land.

Where pain ceases, where they stand,

In eternal peace so grand.

With your wings, cover their flight,

Through the stars, into the night.

Lead them to the heavenly light.

Angel's farewell, a loving sight.

In this journey, they're not alone.

With an Angel, their path shown,

To a world, yet unknown.

In your care, their spirit's flown.
