It is with great sadness that the family of Mittie Sue Hughes-Johnson announces her passing on Thursday, July 2, 2020, at the age of 92 years.
Sue will be lovingly remembered by her two daughters, Melinda (Tom) Novembrino and Laura (Lawrence) Sanchez. She will also be fondly remembered by her five grandchildren, Nicole, Andrea, Michael, Natasha, and Christina; great-grandson, Maddeaux; and brother, Jim Hughes. Sue will also be forever remembered by her numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family and dear friends.
Sue was born on July 21,1927 in Spearman, TX, to her parents, Milton Hughes and Gertrude Howard, and was the fourth eldest child amongst her four sisters and two brothers.
The Hughes Family moved to Colorado when she was seven years old. After high school, Sue moved to Albuquerque, NM, with her friend to attend nursing school, however, her friend talked her into enrolling in beauty school instead.
Sue opened her own beauty salon (Dainty Beauty Salon) business in 1960. She was truly ahead of her time. She was fiercely independent with hard working ethics. She brought joy to everyone who entered the salon with her friendly smiles and loving heart. She had given many haircuts, perms, and manicures to all her sisters, nieces, and grandchildren.
It was at Faith Chapel Church, where Sue has been member since she was 19, during an evening service that a guest missionary spoke about two teenage sisters in Seoul, Korea, who needed a home. Sue, who has never been married and always dreamt about adopting an American Native baby girl, heard this missionary’s message and prayed to see if it was God’s will and she received His Word. On that day Sue embarked on a three-year process to adopt the sisters.
As a single woman, she had to go through the red tape of bureaucracies and finally a change of law that allowed the adoption to be finalized. In 1972, Melinda and Laura became her daughters. She became the mother and grandmother she always wanted to be, and her happiness in life multiplied beyond comprehension.
Sue’s talents were many, she was highly skilled with knitting and crocheting, beloved mother, wife, grandmother, aunt, and community volunteer, confidant, and faith mentor. We celebrate her life.
