Mike Mikus, a resident of Albuquerque NM passed away on February 7, 2025. Formerly of Aurora, IL he had called Albuquerque his home since 1970.
His parents, Herman and Dorothy Mikus of Aurora IL, and his sister, Carolyn preceded Mike in death, as well as members of his wife's family: Lucille Mallory, Gilbert and Rose Cde Baca, John Cde Baca, and his brother-in-law, Bill Higgins of IL. He is survived by his wife, Luana Mikus; his children, Michael (Karen), David (Celia), Marjorie Beck (Dan), and Dan (Kevie) Robert Kueffer (Mindy); his sister, Sherry (Bill, deceased); five grandchildren, Grant, Lexie, Alyssa Kueffer, Cassandra, and Aaron; his brother-in-law, Paul Cde Baca; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
Mike was a lifelong member of the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers). His union brothers liked razzing him about his "antique tools" but he always had a good laugh when some of the newer tools failed, and they looked to Mike to borrow his tools until they could replace theirs. He liked the feedback regarding how the older designs were superior to their newer models.
He enjoyed telling stories of earning enough money to buy his first car, a cherry red 1957 Chevy convertible. He, along with his many friends, enjoyed the cool summer evenings riding with the top down as they explored the city of Aurora.
After completing High School Mike married and went to work at the local grocery store. While stocking produce, he befriended several of the electricians working on the store's refrigeration and lighting. With the help of his Uncle Rich Mikus, who took him down to the Local Union, Mike decided to make the career change and became an apprentice electrician. He proudly joined the IBEW (union) positioning himself to care for his family which quickly grew to six.
Ten years later, he moved his family to Albuquerque, NM "the great southwest" and began a new life.
Mike loved his children deeply and actively participated in their upbringing. As a father, he had a most remarkable sense of calm even in the most difficult of circumstances. As he raised his children, he instilled a joy for life in them and always urged them to follow their dreams. He was compassionate and frequently extended a helping hand to his children's young friends, many of whom he remained friends with throughout his life.
In the early 2000's, Mike left electrical work and opened a promotion products business which he worked at for 10 years, later going back to the electrical business and retiring as a 60-year member of the IBEW.
After retiring, Mike spent his later years enjoying his family, reading, and his cat Sophie. A private memorial was held in March. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the many friends and family who reach out with kind words, prayers, visits and assistance after Mike's passing.
