With profound sadness and enduring love, we announce the peaceful passing of Michael Eric Woodward, who departed this life on June 17, 2025, at the age of 62, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Michael was born on June 1, 1963, in Watertown, New York, the third of four children to Kenneth H. Woodward, Jr., and Martha I., Woodward (nee Giltz). He is survived by his loving siblings; Kimberly and Katherine, and brother David.
From and early age, Michael was an avid athlete, excelling in baseball, football, lacrosse, and most passionately, basketball. He was especially proud of his time as a Nottingham Bulldog -- where his now-legendary two-yard punt return, featuring at least eight juke moves, remains a cherished family story (surely giving his father a good laugh in the great beyond.
In his senior year of high school, Michael relocated to Florida and subsequently enlisted in the United States Navy. His time in service offered him the opportunity to travel the world and broaden his perspective. Following his military service, he made home in Boston, Massachusetts, where his love of learning flourished. He went on to earn a Bachelor's degree from Boston College and a Master's degree from Northeastern University.
Eventually the call of warmer climates led him to settle in Albuquerque, New Mexico near his mother and sister in Santa Fe.
A talented and soulful musician, Michael was rarely far from his beloved bass guitar. He was equally skilled on the drums and was known for his ability to lay down some of the funkiest bass lines -- music was not merely a hobby, but the rhythm and soul that infused every facet of his life.
Michael will be remembered as a gentle spirit with a kind heart, quiet strength, and thoughtful presence. His humility, warmth, and deep compassion left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Though soft-spoken, his impact was profound -- he offered joy, wisdom, and comfort simply by being himself.
He is survived by a loving family who will cherish his memory always; sisters Kim Woodward and Kate Phipps; brother David Woodward and sister-in-law Ramona Woodward; nieces Jasmine Blowe, Tamara Woodward, and Danielle Woodward; and nephew David Woodward, Jr. Each of them carries with them the laughter, the music, and the enduring love that defined Michael's life.
A private remembrance will be held in his honor. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages those whom wish to honor Michael's memory to share moments of kindness with someone, or to listen to a song that moves your soul -- just as Michael so often did.
Let the music play, and may his memory forever be a blessing.
