Melvin West died at home from cancer at the age of 89 on September 10, 2018.
He was married for 53 years to Sue and they had two boys, Mel and Doug, and seven grandchildren. Melvin was born and raised in Dexter, New Mexico and retired as a New Mexico State Police Captain after 30 years of service. To describe Melvin, one might say he loved the Lord. He was a loving husband to Sue and caring father to his sons. He was a strong, dedicated Christian man that read his bible daily and always had a smile for everyone; he laughed a lot, he was very patient, he always looked for the good in people.
Melvin loved to work in his shop and enjoyed making things for Sue and the boys. He liked being a New Mexico State Police Officer, being on the NMSP Pistol Team, teaching at the NMSP academy. He enjoyed being involved with DARE (a Christian drug rehabilitation program) and his church, leading bible studies. Melvin liked watching his kids play basketball – he liked the Dallas Cowboys – he liked green chile on his eggs – green chile stew – green chile on enchiladas and green chile on anything. He enjoyed life and he was a man that was looked upon as a man you wanted to be around. He was very humble and kept quiet about his accomplishments and the good things he did. These are just a few reasons why we loved him dearly.
