Mary Keefer Bard, born on November 11, 1924, in New York City and a proud Registered Nurse, lived a life of extraordinary depth, love, and purpose. She raised her three children in Los Alamos, New Mexico alongside her beloved husband Richard, building a home filled with warmth, strength, and tradition. In her later years, she made Albuquerque her home at Montebello Senior Living, where she embraced a vibrant new chapter - finding joy, friendship, and community even after the profound loss of Richard, her husband of 69 years.
To some she was Mary, Mom, or Mrs. Bard - to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren she was Grandma, GG, "Military Mary," and "Your Grace," a title given with both laughter and genuine reverence. At 99 years old, she became an ordained minister to marry her grandson - a moment that perfectly captured her spirit: devoted, determined, and full of love. She was grandmother and great-grandmother to a beautiful, boisterous family who marveled at her in equal parts awe and adoration.
Mary had a gift for making everyone feel uniquely special - and she had a way of ensuring every grandchild felt like the most important person in the world to her. She shared in their passions, followed them down every imaginative path, and turned even the hardest work into joy. Whether it was spending an entire day making 24 jars of apricot jam from backyard fruit, slipping candy on car rides, building refrigerator-box forts, planning summer days at the pool, or singing legendary bedtime songs - she created memories that will last a lifetime. She held her family to high expectations while loving and believing in them fiercely, and because of that, there is very little her grandchildren don't believe they can accomplish.
Tough as nails yet endlessly generous, she treated every person with dignity and expected the same in return. At Montebello, she built lasting friendships and created countless moments of laughter and love - especially among her cherished circle of lady friends, with whom she shared many spirited games of Mexican Train. That community was a true home to her, and the friends she leaves behind carry a piece of her warmth always.
She was a great woman in her own right - and everyone lucky enough to have her guidance carries a little of that greatness within them. Her sheer force of will ensured it.
She is now reunited in heaven with her beloved husband Richard, her brothers and sisters, her daughter Jennifer, and her son-in-law Bobby - who loved her as a mother, just as she loved him as a son.
