Margaret Joanne Schmit

June 18, 1934 — April 19, 2023

It is with great sadness to announce that Margaret Schmit has passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family.

Margaret was born in Detroit, Michigan in June of 1934. She attended St. Anthony High School class of 1952. She then attended Wayne State University where she was a member of Pi Kappa Sigma Sorority. Graduating in 1956, Margaret then got a certificate in Occupational Therapy largely teaching war veterans to use prosthetic limbs. She moved to California to take a job at Long Beach Veterans Association Hospital. There, she met her husband to be, Robert Schmit, a surgical resident. After a whirlwind romance, Marge and Bob were married in May of 1957. They started a family shortly after but they both also became pilots. Flying was a great passion for Margaret. They had a total of 5 children and moved to Rolling Hills, CA for the country life.

Margaret was very active with the National Assistance League for 55 years, Little Company of Mary Hospital, Mission Doctors Association, Peninsula Chapter of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, St. John Fisher Church, Rolling Hills Community Association and the Rolling Hills Womens Club.

Marge and Bob decided to retire to Santa Fe, New Mexico where they had vacationed for many years. They were active with the Santa Fe Opera and the Museum of Fine Art. Marge was strong in her Catholic faith which guided her thru her illness. Margaret was an animal lover. She enjoyed traveling, skiing, cooking, entertaining, the opera, the arts and most of all, her family.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Hilary. She is survived by her husband, Robert; son, Robert (Kathleen) Marlies, Patricia (Don) and Diana (Stephen). Margaret was a much-loved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be greatly missed by all.
