Mae Elizabeth Gardner (née Oestreich)

Mae Elizabeth Gardner, 90, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2024.

Mae was born in Woodville, Ohio, and grew up on her family's farm in Luckey, Ohio, where she developed the strong values and work ethic that defined her life. A natural leader, Mae served as senior class president in high school and played piano for her church, demonstrating her leadership abilities and musical talents from an early age.

In 1953, Mae married Jack Gardner, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with love, adventure, and shared experiences. Together, they traveled to many destinations, often accompanied by close friends, and created lasting memories during family camping trips with their children. In retirement, Mae and Jack enjoyed hunting for antiques, finding joy in uncovering unique treasures.

Mae was a woman ahead of her time. She pursued education and opportunities that many women of her era had not, embodying the spirit of a groundbreaker, pioneer, and independent thinker. Her greatest influence was felt within her family, where her unwavering belief in her loved ones encouraged them to reach their potential. Mae's guidance, mentorship, and steadfast encouragement shaped the lives of her children and grandchildren, leaving a legacy of strength, inspiration, and love that will be carried forward for generations.

Mae had a fulfilling career as a secretary at Sandia Labs in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In retirement, she remained deeply engaged in her community. She served as president of the local chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE). She volunteered extensively with Presbyterian Hospital, the Animal Humane Society, and Albuquerque Public Schools.

Mae is survived by her sons, Bob and Bruce Gardner; her siblings, Paul Oestreich, Connie Fleming, and Sharon Fischer; her grandchildren, Justin, Froy, Rheana, Cy, and Duncan Gardner; and her great-grandchildren, Ashley, Aubree, Noah, and Ella Gardner, as well as Easton and Greyson Reeves.

Mae's devotion to her family, commitment to service, and zest for life will be remembered and celebrated by all who knew her. She was a trailblazer whose strength and guidance left a profound impact, creating a legacy of love, determination, and vision to inspire her family for future generations.

A celebration of her life will take place at a later date. Family and friends are invited to join together in reflection and remembrance of Mae's vibrant spirit and lasting legacy. The date and time of the ceremonies will be communicated to all who knew and loved her.
