Mabel Ann Desterhouse, 86, peacefully passed away on January 9, 2019, at her home in Albuquerque New Mexico. She was born July 24, 1932, in Bennington Nebraska, the daughter of Herman Hans and Matilda Lena (Baumer) Sievers. Mabel met Richard (Dick) Lester Desterhouse at the local movie theater where she made popcorn and attended folks to their seats. They fell in love and married on May 1, 1948 celebrating 70 years of marriage in 2018.
Anyone who knew Mabel new of her love of golf. She played golf, watched golf, and even worked a professional tournament or two. She served as president of the Women Golf Association at Arroyo Del Oso for many years, and actively participated with other groups in Albuquerque, and in Kansas. Mabel also enjoyed bowling and served as president, secretary, and treasurer for multiple bowling leagues throughout the years. She also loved to bake; always making special cookies and cakes for all occasions, and a variety of confections for every holiday. She passed on her love of golf and baking skills to three generations, and her gifts will continue to live on.
Mabel actively engaged in raising her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Always on-hand to cheer and clap for every recital, song, play, and sports outing or to pick up the kids from school, and buy every raffle ticket and candy bar that came around. She was also active in the local community serving in the PTA, at Faith Lutheran Church, and serving at the polls through many election cycles.
Mabel is preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Viola Baker, Lavonne Roach, and Sonny Sievers; and her son, David Herman Desterhouse. She is survived by her children, Beverly Smith, Rick (Annie) Desterhouse; grandchildren, Adele Martin, Renee (Jeff) Ehlert, Richard (Tanya) Law, Justin (Jamie) Desterhouse, David Desterhouse Jr., and Jimmie Desterhouse; great-grandchildren, Jacob Spaltensperger, Arcy, Alek, Ashr and Tayla Law, Mathew, Avery, and Jaxon Desterhouse; and great-great-grandchild Emberly Law.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, January 19, 2019, 1:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 10000 Spain Rd. NE.
