Lydia Benavidez Lopez, a beloved wife and mother, peacefully entered eternal rest on Wednesday, September 13, 2023. She graced this world with her presence on Tuesday, June 27, 1950, in the town of Chama, NM, as the cherished child of Samuel and Josefine Benavidez. Lydia's legacy of love endures through her devoted husband, Joe Lopez; her son, Mario; her daughter, Elena; and her dear sisters, Maxie Torrez, Jessie Fisher, Nancy Benavidez, and Loretta Laliberte; along with a multitude of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished in-laws from both the Benavidez and Lopez families.
Lydia's life stands as a testament to her unwavering commitment to education, spanning four decades as a dedicated teacher across three different school systems within the state of New Mexico. Her teaching journey commenced in 1974 in her hometown of Chama, NM, continued for 21 years in what she affectionately referred to as her second home, Cuba, NM, and culminated in a 15-year tenure with the Albuquerque Public Schools, primarily at La Mesa Elementary. Lydia retired from her cherished profession in 2016, leaving an enduring impact on countless lives.
In loving memory of Lydia, a Rosary will be held at the FRENCH - Wyoming on Saturday, September 23rd, 2023, 10:30 a.m., followed by a Cuba connection with her friends at El Bruno's Restaurant. The funeral service honoring her life will be held at Saint Patrick's Catholic Church in Chama on September 30th, 2023, 10:30 a.m., followed by a reception at the Parish Hall.
