Lucas Mateo Diaz, 16, of Albuquerque, NM passed away on Monday, October 19, 2026, at the University of New Mexico Hospital. He was born on September 13, 2010, to Emily and Abiel Diaz. He attended Cien Aguas International School from kindergarten through eighth grade and enrolled at Albuquerque High School just as he was diagnosed with cancer. Lucas was passionate about soccer as a player and fan. He played on many club soccer teams and was an honorary member of the AHS team, playing his last game two days before his death. Lucas loved cars and was proud to own his first one and was working toward his driver's license. Lucas was a friend to many. He loved the underdog and saw the unseen. While he didn't use a lot of words, he freely showed his love and care. Lucas' smile filled a room, and his pranks filled us all with laughter. He fought hard to the end, and we are grateful for every moment we shared with him.
He is survived by his parents, Emily and Abiel Diaz; and his three siblings, Sun, Liliana, and Marco Diaz; as well as large extended family both in the US and Mexico.
We invite you to celebrate Lucas' life on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at New City Church, 4700 San Mateo Blvd. NE. Gathering/greeting the family will be held at 10:30 a.m., with services beginning promptly at 11:30 a.m. Burial services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. A reception will be held at St. John United Methodist Church, 2626 Arizona St. NE, following his burial. Everyone is welcome to attend these events as we mourn but also celebrate the life of our beloved Lucas.
