Obituary for Lloyd Spotted Wolf, Sr.
Lloyd Spotted Wolf, Sr. (Maaro'gash: Elk) passed away peacefully on March 15, 2026 in Albuquerque, NM. Lloyd was a beloved Father, Brother, Uncle, Grampa, Great-Grandfather, and Husband. He was 84.
Born in Elbowoods, ND in 1941, Lloyd lived a full and honorable life. A loyal Hidatsa tribal member (Prairie Chicken Clan), he always loved his people and homelands of the Fort Berthold Reservation of North Dakota.
Lloyd graduated from Flandreau Indian School, then attended Haskell Junior College in Lawrence, KS. He honorably served in the United States Army, something he was always very proud of. After, he began his life's work with the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs, rising to Chief Contracting Officer of the West Central Office, building schools, roads and infrastructure for all the tribes of the western United States before retiring in 1993.
Always an athlete, Lloyd really enjoyed running, competing in hundreds of 10k's, several Half-Marathons, and numerous Marathons, including the Duke City Marathon (Albuquerque) several times, the Dallas-Whiterock Marathon, and The Los Angeles Marathon (twice). He also enjoyed spending quality time with his wife in gaming casinos.
Lloyd and his wife, Rose Marie, were married for 60 years, most of which was spent living in Albuquerque, NM, with short stints in Aberdeen, SD, and Laughlin, NV. Together they had three sons, nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his grandfather Tom Spotted Wolf, his mother, Elsie White Body, sisters Ramona Foolish Bear, Roxy Cutler, Barbara Couture, and Charlene Lyson, brothers Meredith (Dreke) Irwin, Wilbur Spotted Wolf, Robert "Bobby" White Body, and Gerald (August) Mitchell, nieces Susan Crows Breast, Barbara "Tiny" Walker, Iva Lyson, Merle Irwin, and Stephanie Irwin, and nephews Elgin (Sonny) Crows Breast, James (Jimmy) Crows Breast, and Ronald Lyson.
He is survived by his wife Rose Marie Spotted Wolf, Sons Michael (Marilyn) Spotted Wolf, Calvin Spotted Wolf, and Lloyd (Ashley) Spotted Wolf, Jr., Grandchildren Tanya (Ray) Dimas, Misty (Victor) Vargas, Chanel Spotted Wolf, Amy Spotted Wolf, Derek Spotted Wolf, Isabella Spotted Wolf, Elizabeth Spotted Wolf, Rock Spotted Wolf, and Presley Spotted Wolf, many great-grandchildren, sister Belva Rowe, nieces Mina Howling Wolf, Lorraine Howe, Lori (Eric) Severance, nephews Kenny (Claudia) Lyson, Terry (Becki) Lyson, Daryl (Dori) Lyson, Dale Crows Breast, Casey Cutler, and Albert Couture.
The wake will be Wednesday March 18, 2026 from 5-7 PM at French Funerals (1275 Unser Blvd, Rio Rancho, NM 87144).
Funeral will be Thursday, March 19, a 10:00AM graveside service at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. Everyone is welcome to meet at French's at 8:30AM to join the family procession to Santa Fe. A light meal will be served at the family home to follow.
